1. Howard, the new kid at school, told Victor that he could not be around him anymore because Mexicans were bad, dirty, and untrustworthy people. What kind of effect did this comment have on Victor? Do you think Victor can be considered an easily manipulated and influenced boy?
2. Why do you think Victor's parents had different views and reactions on why Victor had gotten in trouble at school for bringing the pocket knives and "being involved in a knife fight?"
3. How did meeting the two American cowboys change Victor's mind about what he had heard in school about Mexican people?
4. Why did Victor's father decided to buy the man that was constructing their new house, a brand new truck, and what did he teach Victor and his brother, Joseph, about making mistakes?
5. Victor always finds new reasons to look up to his father, mother, and older brother, but when he goes to school, he is troubled because he hears all kinds of bad comments about Mexican people, to the point where he becomes confused and does not know what to believe or if he should look up to his family the way he was taught to. Why do you think this happens?
These questions are for chapters 5, 6, and 7. I know we have a lot of stuff going on the weekends so I tried not to fill us up with a bunch of reading.
1. After Victor met Howard and heard him say that Mexicans were bad, dirty, and untrustworthy people. Victor felt ashamed of his family. He started seeing their dark skin as an ugly trait. He looked in the mirror and realized he was a Mexican also, but he didn't want to be. I think Victor was easily influenced by what he heard because he's seen enough white people treating Mexicans badly. Also because he is only a little kid in Kindergarten who has no real position and his mind is always changing.
ReplyDelete2. His father was aware of the racial discrimination in the school because he knew the principle was lying when he accused Victor of being in a knife fight. The mother was just worried about what the principal thought, she only saw the outside of things and accepted that bringing knifes to school was unacceptable.
3. After Victor met the two cowboys his perspective about Mexicans changed again. He saw that they were right that Mexicans were good, loving and caring people. They ate together at the table like a family should and their bond was one that many people wish they could have.
4. Victors father bought Englebretson, the man who ran the construction site for the ranch, a brand new truck because it was his mistake for not asking the man to move his truck before he blew up the dynamite. He taught Victor and his brother that a good man is always thinking ahead and doesn't make mistakes just like he had done.
5. I think the reason why Victor doesn't know whether to look up to his parents or not is because of the bad things he hears at school about Mexicans. He is easily influenced by the comments and stereotypes kids say about what they don't know, yet, he lives with Mexicans and sees that they are noble and loving people. He still takes in consideration what others think instead of what he sees.
1. He started to question his belief. I think he is easy to influence because he was trying to learn his surroundings and when the kids told him negative opinion about Mexican, he started to confuse.
ReplyDelete2. Because Victor's dad knew Victor wouldn't do such thing when he can't even open the knife. His father probably be aware that there will be stereotype and racist in school that led him to do so. So the father don't really blame Victor.
3. Victor was more confident to believe that Mexicans weren't bad like people said and that Mexicans are loving people.
4. He bought the new truck because he accidently blew up the old truck (which he supposed to remind the old worker to move it away) as well as the house. He teach Victor and Joseph that a goid man is always thinking ahead.
5. Because he is now interact with the society so he mind to hear different perspectives from others than from his parent. Unfortunately he only recieve discrimination. Yet others' words couldn't prove itself so he believe his ethic wasn't bad after all.
