Critical Questions                                                                                                       Ishmael F.

1.How many rejections did Victor Villasenor get until he got his first published book? Did or did he not get fazed after that many rejections?

2. What did Villasenor talk about in his speech? Who was his audience?, and how did they react?

3. In the beginning of the second chapter Villasenor has a flashback, what do you think sparked the flashback? Do you believe this flashback had a significant impact why or why not?

4. How was Victor's first day of class? How would you describe the teachers attitude towards the Mexican children in the room? With all chapter four in mind, what time frame do you think this scene was taking place?

  1. 1.Victor Villasenor got 260 rejections. He was determined to leap forward within fearless.

    2. He was criticizing abusive teachers during his speech. His audience was English teachers. At first, the audience was surprisingly shock with his dynamic statement, however, most of the audience admired Villasenor speech although a small fraction of them got outrage.

    3. He had a flashback because he thought about the teacher's concern at the bar, which is wondering if Villasenor had a nice teacher, and because he made his speech successful. His flashback has a significant impact because the one nice teacher he had had inspire him to be involve in writing career and to not giving up although he experienced bad memories about English.

    4. Victor's first day of class was tragic because he peed out of his pants and met a mean teacher. The teachers were racist over Mexican kids and being stereotype over them. In my opinion, the time frame was the Progress Era because of how Victor parents said the nation has been civilized.

2.he talked about wrongs in teachers. his audience was english teachers. they took it as a surprise but at the end they thought it was very good.

  3. 1.Victor was rejected 260 times but his motivation inspired him to keep trying.

2.Victor volunteered to give a speech about his recently published paper back book, Macho! but when he began seeing people from the audience leave he began to talk about how much he hated English teachers. His audience of English teachers were offended but some were intrested in his explanation.

    3. In the beginning of chapter two, Victor has a dream where he remembers one substitute teacher he had in Military School for two days. I think the English teacher he talked to at the bar before he went to his hotel sparked that memory. This flashback has an impact on him because now he knows where his inspiration for writing came from. Knowing this, he now can enforce his speeches to English teachers.

4.Victors first day of class was humiliating. He was only five years old and was new to school, he ended up peeing on himself because he was scared of the new surrounding and the teacher. The teacher seemed racist to Mexicans because she made them sit in the back of the class and commanded them not to speak any Spanish. The time frame was around 1945, when Victor was a child and lived in a ranch isolated from other kids, that is why he might have been scared to meet new children on his first day of school, he was only used to seeing his parents.

  4. 1. Victor received 260 rejections before his book was finally published. He was self-motivated, and believed that all those rejections were helping him make his book even better.

    2. Victor decided to talk about the abusive teachers he had during his school years, and how they belittle him and treat him badly due to the fact that he could not speak English, and how teachers like that destroy a child's imagination and creativity. His audience was a group of English teachers, and due to his speech, some of them were offended and decided to leave the conference, while others applauded because of his courage and motivation.

    3. Victor has a flashback about the day they he met the substitute teacher he had back in military school, that inspired his writing and had a positive impact on him. This flashback was sparked by the male teacher Victor met the same day after the conference was over, at the hotel's bar, and how he advised Victor to also talk about the teacher that helped him and had a good impact on him, and how the system helped him as a student, even though the system is flawed. This did have a big impact on him because he decided to follow that teacher's advice.

    4. Victor was embarrassed by his teacher and classmates on his first day of school, because he accidentally peed his pants during class due to the fact that he didn;t know how to speak English, therefore he was not able to ask the teacher to go to the bathroom. The teacher had a racist attitude towards the Mexican children in her class and treated them unfairly. I think it was during the time when a lot of Mexican immigrants decided to move to the U.S.
